The Emergency Services requested that every bridge along the newly constructed channel should be identifiable both from the bank and the channel itself.

Bridges and signs were grouped into several types

Brick built Road Bridges with oval signs

Brick built Railway Bridges with hump back signs

Concrete vehicular access Bridges with long signs riverside with numerals at each of bridge

Pedestrian only Bridges with long signs riverside with numerals at each of bridge

Bridges with Bridleways with long signs riverside with numerals at each of bridge

Signs fitted on the river sides of Bridges required to be fixed in place by absailing down from the parapets in the majority of cases.

In total 22 bridges were named and numbered, Brick Built Road Bridges required 4 signs each.
